Starting September 7th and running through the 11th, the annual Traverse City Tournament will open in Michigan. Columbus and 7 other NHL teams will hold practice sessions and games for the purpose of evaluating prospects. Columbus has actually won the past two tournaments.
Notable names from the Blue Jackets roster include:
Derrick Brassard
6th overall pick - 2006 Draft
Jakub Voracek
7th overall pick - 2007 Draft
Kris Russell
67th overall pick - 2005 Draft
The full roster, as well as the rosters from the 7 other NHL teams participating, can be found here:
Key Columbus prospects like Steve Mason, Stefan Legein and Maxim Mayorov are playing in the Canadian-Russian Super Series so will not participate.
Its also interesting to note that this is the first chance for any undrafted rookies to make an impact. Geoff Platt, who was signed as an undrafted rookie two years ago, used this tournament to propel himself to an AHL Syracuse Crunch contract and eventually getting a cup of coffee at the NHL level. Who will be this year's Platt? We'll have to wait and see.
This tournament is a great opportunity for prospects to show off their skills and maybe a gem is unearthed but the best thing about the Traverse City Tournament -- it signals that training camp is only a few short days away!
10 short days away to be exact!
