Scott Burnside has an interesting article today on ESPN.com regarding UFAs still on the market. He talks about Curtis Joseph and this season being his first since 1989 when he didn't have a team to suit up for by now. As I read down the article he talked about rugged defensemen Danny Markov:
"• Markov is the best defenseman on the market and likely will find a home, but at a much lower price than he's asking. Boston, Detroit, Columbus and the Rangers all could use a man like Markov on the back end at the right price."
So Danny Markov......to tell you the truth I'm surprised this player has not found a job yet in the NHL considering what a premium defensemen are in this league. There can only be one reason for this and Burnside alludes to it - his asking price is still to high. It has also been published that Markov always has the option to return to play in Russia but I don't see that occurring - if it were to occur it would have happened by now. Markov's camp is obviously being patient and knows there is interest and it appears they will let camps open in hopes that once teams get a chance to evaluate their squads they may come calling.
As far as Columbus, we could certainly use him. He isn't gonna score you a lot of point (he had 4g, 12a for the high flying Wings last season) but what he will do is give you an honest hard nosed effort every night and generally be a pain in the butt to play against. Sounds like a "Hitch player" to me. Unless Columbus suffers an injury early on to the blueline or we have another defection (read Svitov) which is unlikely I don't see him in a Blue Jacket uniform this season but never say never - right Michael Peca!
