Don't expect Schneider to land in Cbus unless....(UPDATED!)

Kevin Allen on USAToday.com just reported that Mathieu Schneider has been put on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks. This was a move so the Ducks could get under the cap and re-sign Teemu Selanne.

Schneider is 39 and has one year left on his deal at 5.75 mil.

Forecaster.ca has this to say about Schneider:

ASSETS: Has a great point shot and adds an offensive dimension to any team he plays for. Skates well laterally. Is especially productive on the power play.
FLAWS: Injuries have become a major issue over time, as he appears incapable of staying healthy for the entire season. Can get caught out of position.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Power play quarterback.

Next question -- would the Jackets be interested?
The Jackets have the cap room and could certainly use some more PPQB help but don't exepct them to claim the 39 year old at that price. They'll roll with what they have for now.

Where it could get really interesting is if nobody claims him and Anaheim runs him back through the waiver wire where teams could get him at half that price. If I'm the Jackets I think pretty hard about that one as Schneider, while older and injury prone, would add some nice offensive pop to the blueline and your only on the hook for 2.875 for 1 year.

Of course adding another d-man to an already crowded blueline would certainly mean Howson would have to move one or two guys out.

UPDATE: According to TSN Schneider has cleared waivers.

Also Puck-rakers weighs in on the Schneider possibilities and thinks if he hits re-entry that LA will claim him before the Jackets get a shot. Makes sense since they are under the cap floor and could use the help on 'D'.

LTL, LA played it really smart...
Schneider is one heck of a veteran, who better to guide the young and upcoming defensemen at LA ??
Now they are able to claim him at half price.. I am tipping my hat to LA, solid move... also they are under the cap so they can easily do this... I would be shocked if LA didn't pick up schneider at half price and with only 1 year left on his contract... Nice job LA

BTW I wouldn't mind seeing Schneider in a CBJ uniform... but the chances are really slim....
