You be the judge?

This is the aftermath of Kyle Beach scoring in an empty net in a major junior game last night:

That's the thing with hockey that you don't find much in other sports... if you show up your opponent then be prepared for a response.

Fire away - showboating or not?

Definitely showboating. You pull up like that at the crease you're asking for it. That's what I like about hockey... There's hardly any "over the top" celebrations. In football, if you hit a guy, you do a dance. Last time I checked, that was doing your job! Can you imagine if when the goalie made in improbable save, he did something outlandish? Ugh. In my mind, Beach was putting a stick in the hornet's nest. Should there be some suspensions? Yes! But they stood up for what they thought was right. Good for them.

Totally agree with Max (showboating) - just release the shot when you are in the clear, even if killing the clock in involved. Total garbage!

If you don't want him to do it, don't LET him do it. Yeah, there was some showboating there, but the fact is, there shouldn't have been time for it. He gained the zone onsides and had enough time to slow down even more than he did before anyone was even close to him. I'd be more upset with myself for not pressuring him at all than I would be at him for showboating before the goal.

Nothing wrong with what Beach did. You don't want to get scored on then learn how to play hockey more than just fight.

Of course it's showboating, but hardly justifying the donnybrook that ensued. It was a stupid thing to do, because it creates an obvious opportunity for the other team to vent their frustration over losing.

Skate over, give the guy a face wash, a few choice words and be done with it. Make sure that next game, the guy needs eyes in the back of his head. Everybody gets that, and it is part of every game -- football, baseball, hockey.

Too many thugs looking for reasons to beat somebody up. It's the same phenomenon that you see in basebally, where any pitch on the inside corner has the batter ready to charge the mound. Fighting is about protecting your players. If a guy skates hard right up to your goalie when he is making a save, he is doing his job. Sure, let him know that next time he won't get that close, but let's stop dropping the gloves everytime somebody gets a cross-eyed look.

I agree with JAL. It was showboating, but that response wasn't justified. Send out an enforcer to square up with him on the next faceoff, or next game. You don't throw a stick and get in 15 different fights. Send a message, don't lose your head.
