Stat of the day

Average PP time last season per game for our defensemen:

Kris Russell: 3:09
Backman: 2:38
Tyutin: 2:12
Klesla: 2:06
Commodore: 0:22
Hejda: 0:11
OKT: 0:02

Here is something I found very interesting. Ron Hainsey had a whopping 4:28 in PP minutes per game last season and only put up 32 points. That was 17th most in the NHL amongst defensemen with 40 or more games played. That is also more than double what Tyutin had and almost double Backman.

A guy like Tyutin put on 20 points with just 2:02 in PP time -- I don't think its out of the question he can match Hainsey's production or exceed it with double the PP time. Heck Backman had 18 points and he should also see a lot more PP time.

Remember to that the Rangers did not score alot of goals last season - even with all that fire power. In fact they only had 213 goals -- the Jackets had 193.

The key may be the development of Kris Russell. With the failure to land a clear cut PPQB I think the window is wide open for Russell if he can take the reigns.

I don't want the Jackets to have to rely on the young players but I think after the dust has settled we are going to need get some more production out of guys like Brassard/Voracek/Russell as well as healthy years from Modin and Torres to really be a playoff threat. We are due for some young players to break out.

To also have a guy like Tyutin really embrace a bigger role and we are in business.

This is a good post for all the retards out there who are having a heart attack that we didn't up grade our defense. Not only that, but we have so many more options from the point. All of our new guys have seen time on the 2nd pp unit at some point or another. Brassard also works the point on the pp.

Imagine...the bluejackets with options on both d and the forward positions? Holy smokes!

I've never seen so many ledge jumpers in my life. I don't think we are a lock for the playoffs but we will be in the fight right until the end.

If Brassard, Voracek or Filatov surprise then we could really make some noise.
