This and that

NHL.com asks is Columbus "Playoff-bound?"

With the All-Star break rapidly approaching, the surging Blue Jackets suddenly find themselves in a position to be in the playoff race until the very end. They currently sit in eighth place in an extremely tight Western Conference race.

"We are willing to do anything to win a hockey game, from a work standpoint," Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock said. "If it's not pretty, at least we're working. Tonight wasn't a masterpiece, but we worked and we stayed with it, we battled. The people in the stands really recognize that right now. (The fans) won't let the team drop their level (of play). I feel it on the bench, they are demanding that we keep going and I haven't felt that since I started coaching here (until now)."

Perhaps the most impressive part of the Blue Jackets' recent run has been their ability to win games despite being hit hard by the injury bug. Columbus is playing without captain Rick Nash, as well as six other regulars.

"We're showing a lot of poise and a lot of patience from what is a very young team right now," veteran center Michael Peca said. "We're getting great contributions from everyone in this locker room right now."

The fact they are doing this with some many injuries is the story right now.

Another day.. another story about Steve Mason..

..the catch?

This one is from Australia! Check out this link via the NYTimes.com.

Our good buddy Eklund will not get off the Jason Spezza rumors...

There is no doubt that Mason who is having a magic season to date has knocked out the incumbent, and yet Pascal Leclaire is no slouch and still highly regarded. Many believe that Leclaire, who just last year was a shutout machine while playing for an average defensive team, could still eclipse many of the current NHL starters.

From a source, "The Islanders are holding onto Doug Weight and with news the Dipietro may be done for the year, the time may be right to make a move. Leclaire could be a nice insurance policy and if they move for him now, they could always package Leclair again prior to the deadline should a contender's #1 go down."

The Ottawa Senators are also very much in on this as well as I, and pretty much everyone else, have stated for the last 10 days.

The Jackets love Spezza. Hitchcock particularly likes him and believes that he should and could be the perfect star to play with Nash.

The Sens are definitely interested in Leclaire.

Maybe I'm completely wrong about this but I see no way the Jackets make a play for Spezza... none! The economics just do not work with a contract like that with this market and the way Howson is building this team. That without factoing in the question marks that surround Spezza regarding his character and committment or the price it would take to trade for him.

If the Jackets believe Mase is their ace right now and think they can ride this horse all season perhaps they consider dealing Leclaire. I still don't buy it... besides who is going to deal for an injured Leclaire especially now that we are hearing he is considering ankle surgery? If you deal him you better be sure damn sure about Mase and this kid is going to need a rest and is still just a rookie... you'll also need to bring in a capable backup.

The pie in the sky is great but that is all Spezza is. I believe Howson will concentrate on acquiring capable and competitve players who will fit into the salary structure of this team now and into the future. He will not mortgage the future. Howon's philosophy is the right one and that is to build the core of your team through the draft and them compliment that nucleous. Guys like Mason/Brassard/Russell/Voracek/Dorsett/Boll/Filatov are the players that will take this team to the next step.

So with that said this team has holes that I expect Howson to fill. I look for guys who will be a UFA this season or next (ex. Weight, Antropov or Kubina) or your younger players who may need a change of scenery (ex. Vermette, Lombardi) that aren't superstars, won't cost arms and legs but will compliment this roster....think RJ Umberger mold.

Puck-rakers is reporting that Curtis Sanford has been put on waivers.

The Jackets are rumored to be interested as well as the Dallas Stars. The Stars are below us in the standings so they will get priority in terms of claiming him. If he slips past them and the Jackets do grab him then we'll know something is definitely up w/ Leclaire...be it injuries, trade bait, etc.

Then again Leclaire is on the IR so they could still pick him up, send LaCosta down and if Leclaire does come back just put him on waivers again.

Stat watch. R.J. Umberger scored his 13th goal of the season, matching the total he had all last season with Philadelphia.

Winter Classic watch. According to Michael Buteau at Bloomberg:

The Las Vegas Strip, Yankee Stadium and California’s Rose Bowl are on the list of potential sites for the National Hockey League’s annual outdoor game, NHL Chief Operating Officer John Collins said.

The league is evaluating potential locations of future outdoor games two weeks after this season’s edition, between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field on Jan. 1, drew the highest television ratings for the NHL in 34 years.

“This is really kind of becoming a destination event for hockey fans, but also sports fans,” Collins said in a telephone interview. We want to “open it up to the masses.”

My money is on Yankee Stadium getting the game for next year. I like the idea of hosting these in NHL cities with passionate fans and not turning this into some kind of glitzy 3 ring circus. The outdoor bringing the game back to its roots cold weather backdrop formula works.

I mean Vegas? C'mon guys. Every NHL city would like a piece of this action so lets keep the focus there. The All Star game would be one thing since that is a phony 3 ring circus anyways.

This and that

According to Puck-rakers Maksim Mayorov is on his way to join the team for his first cup of coffee in the NHL.

Couple of thoughts on this one:

* Is there anyone left in Syracuse? Got to feel a bit for those guys who dropped yet another game last night 4-3.

* Mayorov is playing better of late after a pro-longed slump. According to Lindsey Kramer he's got 2g and 2a in his past 4 games.

* Perhaps this could be an opportunity to showcase this kid for a potential trade?

* My guess its Jared Boll who is hurt as he left the game with a "lower body injury" last night. Alexandre Picard probably would go in for him but if say a Modin needs a night off perphaps Mayorov gets a peak.

Great game last night for the hockey Buckeyes. They put the hurt on Army early and often and routed them 6-1.

Of course my man-crush was re-ignited on Zac Dalpe. He didn't get on the scoreboard buy I can see why scouts love this kid's potential. He's got a protypical NHL frame and moves extremely well. He was strong on the puck all night and seemed to shoot or make a play equally as well.

The goal of the night belonged to John Albert. He was good all night but he had an eye popping individual effort that was pure highlight reel material.

That Toy kid on 'D' is very physical and gritty -- loved him.

The story of the night was the #2 team in the country, the Miami Redhawks, getting upset by Clarkson 4-2. I didn't get to catch much of that game but the report I got was Clarkson's goatlender stood on his head.

A bit bummed b/c I was looking forward to a OSU/Miami showdown tonight but Clarkson certainly earned their chance to play for the tourney champ tonight at 8 p.m.

I'm definitely headed down to catch the final.

The Winter Classic was up 12% from last year and pulled a 2.9. This has quickly become the marquee event for the NHL which was in need of an event to draw some casual viewers in. I watched it start to finish and it is indeed spetacle to behold.

My money is on New York getting it next season. As many have mentioned how cool would it be to see a game like that at the Shoe? 105 strong... Jackets need to get a lot better before anyone would even listen to that idea. Heck they only managed to get on Versus once this season. Still we hockey fans can dream.

Nikita Filatov notched his 6th goal for his Russian squad in the World Juniors as they knocked off the Czech Republic 5-1 and will face Canada tonight in the semi-finals. This kid is delivering and should come back to Syracuse/Columbus with a new found swagger.

As far as the game tonight in St. Louis...what more can you say than just keep doing what your doing.

If your like me and keep waiting for a let down (years of losses and failed expectations will do that to a guy) I'm not sure that is going to happend.. These guys aren't getting lucky here....they are playing within themselves and everyone has been sparked from the exceptional goaltending Mason is providing.

Second night of a back 2 back on the road...you think for sure loss right? Not with the way this team is bringing it right now.

Be sure to check out Michael Arace's thoughts on the new R Bar. He sums it up nicely.

GO JACKETS!

Winter Classic II

A cool pic of what the Winter Classic setup at Wrigley Field in Chicago will look like:

Pretty cool. Anyone planning on making the trip out since the Jackets don't play at home on New Year's Eve this season?

Blue biscuits

Tragic news in the hockey world yesterday as 2005 #10 overall pick Luc Bourdon of the Vancouver Canucks died in a motorcycle accident. Bourdon was only 21 years old and made his NHL debut in the 2006-07 season playing 9 games before getting sent back to his junior team and then 27 last season splitting time with their AHL affiliate the Manitoba Moose.

My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends. RIP Luc.
You can read more on the story here.

Aaron Portzline reported in Puck-rakers that Columbus had the 4th highest ratings amongst US cities for game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals between Pittsburgh and Detroit:

1. Pittsburgh 33.1/47
2. Detroit 18.2/28
3. Buffalo 6.2/9
4. Columbus 4.1/7
5. Minneapolis 3.7/7

Now of course Columbus is sandwiched right in between those two cities and there are certainly plenty of Pens and Wings fans in this area.

That said those are still impressive numbers regardless as they are still hockey fans and you better believe we will have that many and many more watching when the Jackets finally make the playoffs.

Who says Columbus can't support hockey? This is a pretty damn good sign to me that they will, especially when its a winner.

The Winter Classic will be played in Chicago at Wrigley Field. Yep, its been announced. The Chicago Blackhawks will take on the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field for the second Winter Classic.

Of course remember last year's Classic up in Buffalo was a rousing success for the NHL, especially in the ratings department.

The NHL has to be careful though, part of the charm of last year's event was it was something the US hadn't seen before. They must be cognisant to the fact that making this a yearly event could drain the appeal.

Still though, I'm excited for it. I like college football but give me a hockey alternative for a while on New Year's Day. I was glued to the tube for the Buffalo/Pit game last year.

Long time Toronto Captain Mats Sundin hinted yesterday to TSN that he may not return to the Maple Leafs next season:

"I do think that I have a lot of different options I can explore," Sundin said. "And I think I still remain (maintain) that I want to end my career as a Toronto Maple Leaf. Saying that, though, the way the situation is right now, I don't have everything in my control, either. There's got to be a mutual agreement there.

Sundin is a big center at 6'5" 231lbs who is 37 years old and he is an unrestricted free agent. I can hear what your saying already "we don't need another Fedorov"....but here me out for sec.

Sundin, playing for a team just slightly better than we were last year in the Leafs, scored 32g, 46a for 78p. He's averaged over 75 points his last 5 seasons and has played no less than 70 games per season in that span.

Instead of giving up assets and cash to get a center, all we would have to do is throw a wad of cash at him, say 6-7 mil over 2 to 3 years. Even at age 37 he would be a tremendous addition to our lineup...and he feels good:

"I felt very strong on the ice this year, and I felt I had as good of a year as I've had in my past 10 years maybe," said Sundin. "Maybe that would be an argument for me to play next year.

"But I don't know. I don't have a decision on that made yet."

Now say by the off chance he and Toronto part ways would Columbus really be on his radar? Unfortunately probably not but that shouldn't stop Howson and Hitch making a pitch. He's played with fellow Swedish countrymen Fredrick Modin so you better believe I have him making some calls.
Then of course there is Rick Nash. Would Sundin be interested in playing with him? I'm sure a phone call from Nash would be answered.

How does this line sound?

Nash - Sundin - Modin

..and I've already nicknamed it the "Smash" line (t-shirts are on order and copyright protection has already been submitted).

Okay I admit its a big dream as I just don't see him leaving Toronto and see this more of a negotiation tactic but hey its the off season, its time to dream!

Winter Classic indeed classic - draws 2.6 overnight rating on NBC

Just saw this via KuklasKorner on Globe & Mail:

NBC exceeded audience expectations for its coverage of the Buffalo outdoor game on New Year's Day by earning a 2.4 overnight rating (percentage of the potential U.S. audience tuned in).

Sources said an American network has not produced an audience of that size for an NHL regular season game since the Fox Sports telecasts in the 1990s.

Last season, NBC's regular season NHL telecasts earned an average rating of 1.0.

UPDATE FROM FOXSPORTS.COM

The Penguins-Sabres game in snowy Buffalo — the first regular-season outdoor NHL game in the United States — drew a 2.6 overnight rating and a 5 share on NBC. Those were the best numbers since a six-game regional telecast on Fox drew a 3.0 overnight rating and a 7 share on Feb. 3, 1996.

The big numbers, in the stands and on TV, came three years after the NHL lockout forced the cancellation of an entire season and after last season's Stanley Cup finals on NBC drew record-low ratings.

"We're delighted by the success of this historic event," NBC Sports president Ken Schanzer said. "The Winter Classic exposed hockey to a larger audience and definitely made new fans of the game."

The Winter Classic ratings also surpassed Wayne Gretzky's final game, which was broadcast on Fox on April 18, 1999, and drew a 2.5/6.

The Buffalo and Pittsburgh markets led the ratings, at 38.2/58 and 17.7/30, respectively. But markets such as Sacramento, Calif., St. Louis and Denver also drew strong ratings, even though the game went up against a number of college football bowl games, including an intriguing Capital One Bowl between Florida and Michigan.

Not sure how many of you tuned in to watch this game but it was truly a spectacle. Even though there were some challenges like the ice and the extended Zamboni stoppages I thought it was a great event.

Futhermore I show up at work this morning and the first thing my co-worker and boss (who seldom watches hockey and is huge into college football) says to me was "did you see that outdoor hockey game?. It was awesome!".

That my fellow fans, is exactly the kind of audience the NHL was going after and judging by these ratings, looks like they did a pretty good job of capturing. Especially when you consider all the sports programming they were up against on New Years Day.

Well done NHL, Pittsburg Penguins and the city and team of Buffalo!
